The Chemical Issue
Dryer sheets work by coating your clothes in a thin layer of fabric softening chemicals — primarily quaternary ammonium compounds and synthetic fragrance. These chemicals remain on the fabric and transfer to your skin. Studies have found that dryer sheet residue can contain formaldehyde, benzyl acetate, and chloroform, among other compounds.
